THE SPRING GARDEN OF
RACHEL ZELAYA
~ Crown Point, IN ~
It was truly amazing to see the accomplishments made at Rachel's
garden.
In a ten year period of time Rachel has created a very plush
retreat.
We were personally tickled to see that the Thomas Jefferson Black
Hollyhock,
purchased at the Farmer's Market just last year, was loaded with
buds...
ready to take center stage. Thank you for sharing your retreat
with us!

"The purpose of my garden is two-fold. One, to have something
in bloom
from early spring to late fall. I have tried to accomplish this
with bulbs,
annuals, perennials, shrubs and grasses. I like to find varieties
that are a bit
different - that you wouldn't find in a normal garden. The climbing
fumitory
is one of my favorites.

I began by putting down newspaper and mulch; taking out a bit
more of
the yard each year. It was a slow process but I wanted to get
each bed finished before starting another one. Water and hardscapes
have helped
finish the yard.
The second purpose of my garden is a retreat from everything.
Now the yard just needs to be monitored for weeds and deadheading.
With all my shade, I very rarely have to water - which is great!"
